One of the first things I learned when visiting Charleston is that, “Miami is further north.” I’ve always enjoyed learning about the biases you may find at the heart of every city or town. But what exactly does this mean? I haven’t had anyone give me a straight answer but it hasn’t taken long to realize that this means Charleston is more “southern” (in a good way) than a lot of other cities that may be geographically, further south. What a beautiful feeling to know that in Charleston you are always only a short walk away from the best shrimp & grits you’ve ever had, in addition to any kind down home southern cooking you can imagine. Furthermore, if you want a taste of France, China, Italy, Japan, and so on…you can have that too. I’m doing my best to ease my way into this so I look good on the beach this summer.
You may still be wondering, Why did I name this photo as such?
Upon sharing this piece with many folks near and far from the south, it had one thing in common. It reminded people of Miami, or a place similar. Miami has a large Cuban influence and if you are not familiar, Cuba is known for its vivid color expressions. But because the photo was actually taken in downtown Charleston, I imagined it could be entertaining to name it playfully as so: miami is further north.
